It has been suggested that Yeh-Hsien is set in what is now modern day Nan-ning, approximately 100 miles north of the
frontiers of Annam. Much of this comes from anecdotal evidence; Waley points out that many of the elements in the tale, particularly the existence of a
cave-master Wu[1] and a great festival around springtime are both historically recorded facts about the region. But here we must be wary of euhemerism, i.e. a
method of rationalising...
